How do I upload a PDF?

E-mail Print PDF

How do I upload a PDF file so I can link to it in my article?

The method's admittedly a little hokey to do from the Front End, but here we go:

  1. Make sure that if you received your PDF in an email from someone else, that you save the PDF from your emailer to a location you can find easily on your hard-drive, like the desktop or something.  It needs to be availalbe somewhere on your hard-drive for you to navigate to in step 5.
  2. Start creating your article.  Give it a title (duh).  Probably easiest at this point to write all the text for the piece, or paste it in.
  3. Now we'll upload the PDF to the server.  Below the text input area where you've written or pasted your article, you'll see an "Image" button.  Click this "Image" button.  That's the hokey part.  We can use the resulting dialogue box to upload our PDF -- not strictly an image but the mechanics work for our purposes.
  4. At the top of the dialogue box you can select an image file to insert in to the article or drill in to another folder/directory.  The files you'll see at this point are all images (JPGs, GIFs, PNGs, etc).  We're not going to select an image, but simply double-click on the "pdfs" folder to drill in to it.  What you're saying by doing this is that you want to put your new file (your PDF) into that particular folder.  Don't select a file.  Don't worry that your existing PDFs don't show up in the list -- PDFs aren't graphic image files so they're not in the list of files to show up here.  This is just how we're getting your new file up to the server.
  5. At the bottom of the dialogue box is a "Browse" button.  Click that.  Use this to navigate on your own computer to where you previously saved the PDF that you're going to upload.  Double-click the PDF, or single-click select it and then click on the "Open" button below.  This will put the path and file name into the text field to the left of the "Browse" button, telling the system where to go find the file.
  6. In this Browse text field, you could make it easier for Step 10, below, if you now block and copy the filename -- NOT the whole path, just the file itself ("brochure.pdf", for example).
  7. Click the "Start Upload" button.  This will start the upload (whoa, hey!) of your PDF.  Once the upload is complete (check the upper right corner of the dialogue box; it should say "Upload complete") click the "Cancel" button in the top right corner or the circled X to close the dialogue box.  Or repeat Steps 5 - 7 if you have more uploads to do for the article.
  8. You're now back at your Submit an Article screen.  Highlight/block the text that you'll use for your link to the PDF.  Try to avoid the omnipresent "click here" links.  Use the name of the brochure/PDF or something like that.
  9. In all those buttons at the top of the text input area you'll see one that looks like a couple links of chain.  The hover text is "Input/edit link".  Click this button.  Another dialogue box will open.
  10. In the "Link URL" field enter the following:    /images/stories/pdfs/         and then paste or type the filename of your PDF from Step 6, above.  So, following the above example, you would enter    /images/stories/pdfs/brochure.pdf      in this field.
  11. Select "Open link in a new window" in the Target dropdown list.  When someone subsequently clicks on your link in the published article a new window will open to display your PDF.  This way people can easily get back to the website by simply closing the new PDF window.  By default they still have the site open and we (hopefully) retain their attention once they're done reading the PDF.
  12. In the Title field, type a quick little description of what the link contains.  This will form the hover text for the link.
  13. Leave the Class field as "-- Not set --".
  14. Click the Insert button.
  15. Repeat Steps 9 - 14, as needed, if you're creating more than one link in your article.
  16. You're done uploading your PDF and have created a link to it in your text, all from the Front End.  Congratulations!  Continue with your article at your leisure.

Rhythms of the Spirit event a huge success!

E-mail Print PDF

What happens when you combine an event in southern Alberta with beautiful spring weather, great theme presentations, meaningful   worship, terrific food, lots of musicians, and a skilled planning team?  A huge success!

Here are some comments from participants:

"Thanks to Rhythms of the Spirit's organizers for breaking new ground in the musical ministry of our church. Trust was demanded amongst liturgists and musicians and speakers, and the result was a dynamism that broke lots of boundaries and set the stage for an amazing finale...also called the "Celebration of Ministry". Our United Church of Canada is a little bit groovier thanks to "Rhythms of the Spirit".

Thanks for making Brian (Browne) and I part of the scene."

Music Theology Network Invitation

E-mail Print PDF

(from the North American Academy of Liturgy newsletter (Spring 2010) - reprinted with permission)

We received the following invitation from Joshua Waggener of Durham University.

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from Durham University! We are contacting you to announce the proposed creation of an International Network for Music Theology, a new locus for research and information in Music Theology. We would greatly value your input as we begin to develop relevant resources, events, and publications. The purposes for founding a network are as follows:

  • To create an international organization with the capacity to attract large-scale funding from private and public funding bodies in the UK, Europe, America and elsewhere internationally
  • To provide an international centre unifying musicological and theological work carried out within academic universities, institutions, and other public and relevant private organizations
  • To create a locus for research in Music and Theology, with special reference to the creation of a new international and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Music Theology
  • To produce a Handbook for Music Theology (prospectively by Cambridge University Press)
  • To present conferences, seminars and lecture series in support of international and national interests in Music and Theology
  • To identify and develop new methodological frameworks for Music Theology
  • To initiate and facilitate research which will sustain and expand the growing field of Music Theology

An essential aspect of the creation of this network is the participation of musicologists, theologians, scholars and music practitioners who would contribute to and benefit from the anticipated publications, events, and online resources sponsored by the centre. Our desire is to serve as a hub for this diverse network of researchers in this emerging interdisciplinary field.

We welcome your comments, and would be grateful if you would consider providing us with any of the following information :

  • Names and contact information for other people or institutions you think might be interested
  • A brief description of any current research you are pursuing related to music theology
  • Suggestions of music theology writings and relevant conferences for possible posting on our forthcoming Durham University Music Theology website

Thank you for taking time to confirm your interest in the International Music Theology Network by replying to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Best Regards,

Professor Bennett Zon (Chairman, Durham University Department of Music)
Professor Carol Harrison (Durham University Department of Theology)
Joshua Waggener (Durham University PhD student in Music Theology and Administrator, International

(I am hoping this will be of real interest to a number of our musicians and so bring a wider horizon to our focus....Betty Lynn Schwab)
